And that was how we ended up standing outside the ruins of an ancient castle. Black smoke rose from inside and out some of the windows. Where the dragon was.
"Do you understand the plan?"
I nodded.
"Just go find the princess and get her back to the village. I'll kill the dragon and meet you back there."
"I know, I understand."
I didn't like this plan, I felt like something was going to go wrong. But my brother had never failed yet when it came to making plans. When he made them, that is, instead of just flinging himself into the action like he usually did.
The castle was pretty small, and when we entered it was clear the dragon was in the great room. And theory said, the prncess would be beyond that.
Looking in the great room, we saw the dragon. It was smaller than I expected, but I felt revulsion for it all the same. Its scales were a deep, purple color and its claws were even darker, turning almotst blood red. Swrd gripped my shoulder and snuck into the room. I followed behind making for the far door. Not far into the room, the beast noticed us.
"Now run!" Sword shouted, getting the dragon's attention and readying his weapon.
I ran, through the door and into a hall. There were rooms all along the walls. I shoved open each door and saw no one. Nothing but broken walls and furniture. Until finally, I fund her.
She was lying on an old, teetering bed and fast asleep. Considering what the villager had said about wizardry, I assumed she was in some kind og wizard's sleep. I touched her shoulder anyway, hoping she would wake up. She didn't. I ehard crashign and roaring from down the hall. I had to get her out of here and help my brother. Pulling her up so she was sitting, I shook her shoulders.
"Wake up, Princess Airabell, wake up!" I felt something funny in my throat when I repeated myself the last time. I knew I was starting to panic for my brother, but that didn't seem to be what I had just felt. But it didn't matter, ebcause at that moment the princess woke up with a small scream. There wasn't time for introductions.
"Come on, let's go!" I grabbed her arm and we ran for it from the room.
To get outside, we had to pass throught he gret room where Sword was holding off the dragon. I coudl tell from the sounds that the fight was still going on, my brother hadn't bee nable to kill it yet. And as we reached the entrance to the great room, I stopped and looked slowly around the door to see the fight.
Just as the dragon hit Sword with a giant claw, sending him flying across the room. His weapon clashing across the floor as he hit.
"No!" I grabbed the princess and ran into the room. "Run, run for the door!" I shouted to her before I released her. As I ran I grabbed a piece fo broken stone, throwing it at the beast. "Hey! Over here!"
The stone hit the dragon and it roared, turning towards me, away from where my brother began to stir.
"Shield don't!" he picked up his sword, running back towards the dragon.
But it was too late. There wasn't even time for me to bring out my shield. I was still running and throwing rocks when the beast's mouth glowed red. Hot, torturous fire spewed from it's mouth and crashed into me. The blast shoved me backwards and to the ground. I heard the beast scream in agony and some part of me knew Sword had killed it. The fire drained away from around me.
I was shaking and in shock, but when I looked at my hands there were no serious burns. My clothes were barely singed. It didn't make sense. I must have been hallucinating. I must be dead.
There was shouting. Sword was shouting at me for acting stupid, for leavng the princess on her own. I looked at him, y head moving jerkily, and then away again. I must be dead, I should be dead. His words were muffled and didn't register in my brain.
From a distance I felt Sword haul me up. I found I could stand. I coud walk. But I was supposed to be dead. Still shouting at me, he gripped the top of my arm and led me out of the castle to where the princess was. He let me go, mvoing instead to talk to the princess and make ure she was safe. I should be dead, why was I not dead?
Then my vision started to go dark. I stepped forward, intending to ask Sword for help. He must have noticed something because in a second he was back at my side.
"No, brother don’t even think about it. Shield!"
But then I had stumbled to my knees, pitched face forward onto the ground, and remembered no more.
So for a challenge I am going to be rewriting a scene once a month for a year. The rules are that I can't look at any previous versions of the scene. On New Years Day next year I will then look at all of them and see if my writing has improved and what I still need to work on. I took a scene I wrote last year in a rush for a deadline. Here is that version, completely unedited. Spelling and grammar and horrible mistakes and all. I will be posting these versions here on Deviantart as well as my tumblr all in an effort to keep me honest, that way I will force myself to actually go through with this for a full year.
February's version will be up soon.
